When my husband and I purchased our new home we decided to go totally modern, from the furniture to the lighting. That meant that we purchased some beautiful furniture pieces, such as a classic Eames lounge chair and ottoman and an Eileen Gray side table. We also chose to use monorail track lighting throughout our home.
There were many reasons for our choice of low voltage track lighting. One was the soft light given off by either long lasting halogen or xenon bulbs. Second was we found many different monorail systems that were configurable to our exact specifications, rail systems that were completely bendable by hand. Being able to custom shape our lighting system meant that we could have direct task lighting or simply illuminate our favorite pieces of artwork using gallery-style lighting. We were able to hang our choice of QP glass pendants at the exact length we wanted using a quick connect adapter. We achieved a true high end designer look.
Installing monorail track lighting was much easier than we had thought. In our kitchen we were able to wire the transformer directly into the existing wiring in the center of the room. We were then able to form the monorail to suit the space. We purchased several different systems in different lengths, 4 foot and 8 foot. We used two 4 foot sections in the kitchen, and an 8 foot section in the living room.
Using careful measurements and "L" and "T" connectors any homeowner can design the perfect lighting for their home. We found Tech Lighting systems to be the best quality. There are many manufacturers of quality lighting such as Thomas, Lithonia, Phillips and Hampton Bay. Each offers a wide array of monorail track lighting systems as we as lights, pendants and matching wall sconces.
We found beautiful hanging pendants with matching lights that we used throughout the house, kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. Using coordinating and matching lighting fixtures helps to give our home a cohesive look.
Today there isn't any reason that any homeowner can't add do-it-yourself designer lighting using track and cable lighting kits.
